bob dylan detained in new jersey August 17, 2009
walking into the wrong neighborhood can net you some trouble. bob dylan found this out the hard way (or the easy way, depending on how you look at it) after he wandered into a Latin community in Long Branch, New Jersey. a 22 year old police officer stopped dylan after residents had reported a ‘scruffy old man’ wandering about acting suspicious. when the officer asked him for I.d. he either shit his pants in disbelief or complete relief. i’m not sure which. he told her who he was, but did not offer any i.d. because, hey, he’s fucking bob dylan. anyways:
Then she radioed her older colleagues at the police station to ask if anyone knew who Bob Dylan was.
‘I’m afraid we all fell about laughing,’ said Spencer. ‘If it was me, I’d have been demanding his autograph, not his ID.
‘The poor woman has taken rather a lot of abuse from us. I offered to bring in some of my Dylan albums. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know what vinyl is either.’ [source: staracsm]
I’m pretty sure that officer feels quite stupid knowing she overlooked one of the biggest legends in music. the most amazing part of that quote is the fact she doesn’t even know what vinyl is.girl, you don’t have it.
