thatwasthen live at UCLA Dance Marathon 2011
The UCLA Dance Marathon against Pediatric AIDS was an amazing success. Not only did 2500 students dance (still dancing as we speak) for a great cause, but we got a chance to rock the crowd with a few well known covers such as “Twist and Shout” by The Beatles and “Shout” by the Isley Brothers. Thanks to everyone who came out today.
Rooftop Sessions with thatwasthen
We love our music so much that we decided to climb up onto Nicky’s roof and let the world know. Here’s an acoustic version of a new song we’ve been working on for our follow up to Q.E.D.. The song is entitled “My Mistake” and is a work in progress.
This video was recorded right before we left for our UCLA Spring Sing 2010 sound check.
thatwasthen wins Best Band at UCLA Spring Sing 2010
On May 14th, 2010, Southern California Rock Band thatwasthen won ‘Best Band’ at UCLA‘s annual Spring Sing.
Spanning the course of over 60 years of tradition, Spring Sing is one of the oldest traditions among the Bruins. Since the end of World War II, the school has honored the talents of their student body with an annual contest. Judged both by audience vote and celebrity guest judges, this contest is one of the most popular events on campus.
Competing against several other UCLA based bands, thatwasthen swept the competition with a knock out performance of “Mr. Politician.” Here are a few behind the scenes photos. As soon as the footage from the show becomes available, you can expect to see it here. Thank you to everyone involved in Spring Sing 2010, as it was an amazing success.

UCLA Mighty Mic 2010 Places to End
Here is the third video from our performance at UCLA’s annual Mighty Mic 2010. This is the track “Places to End” from Q.E.D. Thank you to everyone who came out to support this great cause.
Mighty Mic is a student-run group that organizes a benefit concert every spring at UCLA. Our goal is to use music and other forms of artistic expression as a medium for raising awareness about human rights violations and helping people take action. Two years ago, with OK Go as our headlining band, we raised over $20, 000 to help refugees of the genocide in Darfur. Last year, Blackalicious and Daphne Loves Derby along with many other musical acts joined together to highlight the struggle for human rights in Burma. This year’s concert will focus on the issues of violence and displacement in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Thoughts on Budget Cuts
Ah, September. Time of dying trees, mysteriously persistent heat, and uhh….there was something else I forgot…
Oh, yeah. School.
So I’m back at the good old University of California Los Angeles and there’s lots of fun to be had all around. Unless you’re a teacher, or an administrator. I dunno if you’ve heard, but our state is run by The Governator. And he doesn’t believe in giving money to support education.
You know, the last thread that keeps our society from ripping itself apart. No big deal.
Anyhow, in my first class, English 4W, we were discussing this same issue. The professor passed around a copy of an e-mail that I will reproduce for you here. All the identifying information was removed.
“I am aware that some of you have received notice about a walkout planned for Thursday, September 24, the first day of classes. I am sympathetic with the feelings of frustration that many faculty members have with respect to the furlough program [in which teachers are forced to take days off without pay]. Nevertheless, I must remind everyone that the beginning of the quarter is an important day for our students, many of whom are concerned about their enrollment status in their classes. Accordingly, it is my responsibility to inform you that we expect all Thursday classes and sections to meet as scheduled.”
We discussed this e-mail in depth…the speaker’s choice of words, his/her formality and apparent dismissive attitude. To me it was a futile sort of vibe. But it’s only their “responsibility” to inform us…they “must remind us.” So I guess you can’t fully blame them. In the last 5 minutes our professor asked us to write a poem about what we felt about the e-mail…it was one of those strange moments where thoughts pour out as if from a dam exploded.
It’s not much, but I thought I’d share it:
Futility is easy
when you’re straddled at the top
between mute responsibility
and something you must stop.
But when the bullshit hits the fan
who’s to say what’s right or wrong?
Who’s to see through ambiguities
and actually get things done?
The answer’s lying suffocated,
tied in thick red tape–
the victim just a student
who never wanted to escape.
