we are an open source band. some of you might be wondering what that means. open source simply means that the code which makes up a computer program is readily available, welcoming to progress, and free to redistribute.

the reason i say this is two fold. the first being that we utilize open source technology and software to help promote and distribute our band’s content. secondly, our writing style is very similar to that of programmers in group projects i have been involved with in the I.T. world.

when thatwasthen writes a song, it’s like a coder bringing a few lines of code to the team asking, “how can we turn this into a full program?” once we all analyze the piece of code and develop a clear understanding of functions of the program, we begin to understand how each programmer’s style will effect the outcome of the program (ie: the song). after we are pleased with our ‘beta release’, we will field test the program on several users to see what needs work. we listen to our community just as the open source developers listen to users all around the world.

on the opposite side of the coin we are left with the “proprietary bands”. these are bands that do not listen to their audience. these are bands that are told what to write and how to play. these are bands that are manufactured for profit, not progress.

in terms of open source technology, thatwasthen runs their webserver on Ubuntu Linux, Apache, MySQL, and several other free software packages.
